Surgical solution to correct double vision.
Children aren’t the only patients with strabismus (eye misalignment). Most people with eye muscle disorders are diagnosed before age five. But a large number of patients are seen with this problem for the first time as adults.
Some adults don’t seek care thinking nothing can be done to correct this “old” problem. Luckily for ESA patient Scott, he took action after having double vision for years and now has the clear vision that had eluded him for so long.
Scott was likely born with misaligned eyes and it went undetected. To compensate for the imbalance, he started to unconsciously tilt his head, which also caused one of his eyebrows to be raised higher. His body was trying to adapt to correct the misalignment. When looking at photos from his youth, Scott can see the tilt.
He didn’t start wearing glasses until he was in his 20s and over the years his vision declined. Scott explains, “It got to the point that I couldn’t read street signs while driving and night driving when my eyes were fatigued became a safety concern. I saw two middle lines on the road. And at night when I watched TV, I had to close one eye just to see somewhat normally.”
Scott was under the care of another eye doctor and even visited a neurologist to try and figure out the cause of his double vision. He changed doctors and started to see Dr. Frederick at Eye Surgeons who was able to quickly diagnose the issue and offer options to correct it.
Dr. Frederick performed an outpatient procedure on both eyes simultaneously to correct the misalignment. Scott said he had little discomfort during the surgery or recovery and noticed the change in his vision almost immediately.
“It is almost a miracle how clear my vision is now. I’ve had a stable prescription for several years since the surgery and the eyes don’t seem to want to wander. I’d tell others it’s never too late to fix this condition. I should have done it earlier in life so I didn’t have to struggle with my vision. Dr. Frederick is an amazing surgeon and I’d do it all over again.”
