An Alternative Laser Vision Correction Procedure

Photorefractive keratectomy, commonly called PRK, is a laser vision correction procedure designed to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses. Like LASIK, PRK reshapes the cornea to improve the way light focuses within the eye, but the procedures use different techniques.

Eye Surgeons Associates offers PRK and other refractive surgery options for patients in Rock Island, IL.

How Does PRK Surgery Work?

During PRK, the outer layer of the cornea, called the epithelium, is removed. An excimer laser is then used to reshape the underlying corneal tissue. The epithelium naturally grows back as the eye heals.

Who May Be a Candidate for PRK?

PRK may be an alternative for patients who are not ideal candidates for LASIK, including some individuals with thin or slightly irregularly shaped corneas. A comprehensive evaluation is necessary to determine which vision correction procedure is appropriate for your eyes.

How Is PRK Different From LASIK?

Unlike LASIK, PRK does not involve creating a corneal flap. Because the outer corneal layer must regenerate after PRK, initial recovery typically takes longer and may involve more discomfort than LASIK.
