What to Expect During Your Eye Exam
During a routine eye exam at Eye Surgeons Associates, we evaluate your eye health and vision.
Before We Begin
We’ll ask about:
- Your family’s eye health history
- Medical conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure
- Any vision problems you’re experiencing
- Current medications

The First Half: Testing Your Vision including refraction to determine your prescription
- Vision Test (Visual acuity testing)— Can you read the 20/20 line? If not, we’ll check if new glasses would help
- Reading Vision — Testing your up-close vision
- Side Vision — Checking for signs of stroke or glaucoma
- Central Vision — Using an Amsler Grid to detect problems like diabetes or macular degeneration
- Eye Movement — Looking for muscle weakness or crossing
- Pupil Response — Making sure nerves are working properly between your eyes and brain
- Eye Pressure Testing — Screening for glaucoma
The Second Half: Looking Inside Your Eyes
After dilating your pupils (yes, you’ll be light-sensitive for a few hours, but it’s worth it!), your doctor will:
- Use a special microscope to examine the front of your eye for infections, inflammation, dryness, or cataracts
- Look at the back of your eye where we can see blood vessels in action—helping us spot high blood pressure, diabetes, or stroke risk
- Check your optic nerve for signs of glaucoma or high pressure around the brain and inflammation
- Examine your retina for macular degeneration or tears that could lead to detachment
If needed, we may recommend follow-up testing or refer you to a specialist within our practice for further care. Visit our dry eye specialists in the Quad Cities if you’re experiencing irritation, burning, or blurred vision due to dry eye syndrome.
Did you know? Your dilated eye is one of the few places in your body where we can see blood vessels working in real-time!
